PEER REVIEW Presented By North Carolina American Society of Home Inspectors
For information on the next NC ASHI Peer Review, contact Andy Hilton-Peer Review Chair at (336) 961-6809 or hiltonhome@yadtel.net.
This is a GREAT opportunity to learn from other inspectors and raise the bar for Home Inspectors in North Carolina. NC ASHI is proud to have permission to use the Peer Review program of the Great Lakes Chapter of ASHI. This program has been in use at GLC-ASHI for a number of years and is proven to bring the inspectors’ knowledge and skills to a higher level, “raising the bar” in the Home Inspection industry. The Peer Review is designed to educate experienced and new inspectors alike and is presented in a forum to encourage a “hands on” approach in a non-confrontational manner.
There are two ways to participate in the Peer Review process. Space is limited and early registration is recommended.
1. Educational Review: This session is designed to allow inspectors with less than 100 inspections learn from more experienced inspectors. The Educational Review will be held at the review house. Meet the chairperson at the staging area at the time assigned to you. You will spend approximately 2 to 4 hours at the home with an experienced inspector. There is no pass or fail and a “hands on” approach is encouraged. The group size is limited to maximize the participation of each individual. If you are a member of The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) you will be awarded 6 Membership Renewal Credits (MRC's) for ASHI.
2. Inspector By Review or Master Inspector By Review™ (Approval by the Peer Review Chair is required): This session is designed for inspectors with 100 or more inspections to hone their inspection skills at the review house previously inspected by the Peer Review Committee. On the day of the review you are expected to present to the Peer Review Committee two recent home inspection reports that you have completed. If possible one report should be for a 10 to 30 year old house and the other should be for a house older than 50 years. The reports will be checked for substantial compliance with the North Carolina Home Inspector Licensure Board (NCHILB) and ASHI® Standards of Practice. Your reports are not shared with anyone outside of the committee and will be returned to you before leaving the committee. You will inspect a house as though you are working for a paying client. Using your report / worksheets, you will make an oral presentation to the Peer Review Committee (three inspectors). You will treat the Committee as if they were a group buying the house you inspected. You will be required to find all major deficiencies in the review house as determined by the Committee. Compliance with the NCHILB and ASHI® Standards of Practice is mandatory and a commentary on other visible conditions is recommended. (Note, you may brief the committee from your worksheets or field notes. You do not need to produce a final report that you would normally provide to your client). You are expected to correctly answer 70% of approximately 30 oral questions related to your general knowledge of houses and on the NCHILB and ASHI® Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics. Candidates who successfully complete this program will be awarded a certificate designating them as an "Inspector By Review"™* or "Master Inspector By Review™"*. In addition candidates will receive 6 MRC's for ASHI.
Evening Social The evening will be capped off with a social to discuss to discuss the day's events, share experiences with other attendees and meet with and talk to the NC ASHI Peer Review Committee Members. Fees for Peer Review
